He has a black wet nose, with a snout that is a good length away for his face. History
Birthplace:Yorktown Heights, New York
Family: Father- Stonewall, Mother- Geneva, Numerous brothers and sisters, 9 in his litter alone, also has some nieces and nephews out there
History:
When Nino was born, he had no idea of the life that was in store for him. While most puppies at 7 weeks were just barely weaned from their mother, Nino had his first of many testings to see his potential. When he excelled at those preliminary tests (which excluded 3 of his siblings) he was sent to a home where he would live with a family as lived out his puppyhood. His puppy raisers taught him basic manners and began his training. He was house broken within a week of being with them and soon began learning the basics (sit, stay, walking on a leash). To Nino this was the good life. Had Nino been just a pet, he would have been a near ideal one for the family. While he got into minor trouble, it was nothing major and for the most part he was a good boy. He was a very quick learner and was able to pick up anything that was taught to him.
He started attending weekly training classes and having more intense one on one sessions where things that were expected of him increased. He began to be socialized out in public, getting him used to being around lots of people without getting overly excited. Nino being a friendly dog loved people but he had to learn how to control it. He soon learned that if he didn’t try to jump at people that the ones that wanted to see him (and were allowed) would approach him and if he was calm, they might get permission to pet him. It was much better than being yelled at for pulling on the leash or having sniffed too many butts. Something about that habit his family and trainers disapproved of.
Every couple of months Nino noticed that his family got nervous. They used the word “evaluation” before taking him to a specific trainer who this time didn’t work with him but just gave his family orders of what to have him do. In the beginning he would just show off his basic skills like sit and down, but then he had to walk nicely on stairs, go into unfamiliar areas with temptations on the floor and having to leave it unless he was told it was okay to take something, having strange people approach him yelling odd things, and even having umbrellas opened up right in his face! Nino didn’t understand much of what was going on, but his family and the trainer always seemed happy with the “reactions” he gave.
When he was close to a year, the family dropped him off back at Yorktown heights where he was born. This was a confusing time for Nino, he had thought that he had found his family, and had loved them, but he was now being told that he had a greater purpose. After scoring high on yet another test after arriving, he found out that he was chosen to be trained to be a police dog! Now that seemed exciting! The more Nino learned about it the more he liked! He would not have to be left at home all day while his family went to work, in fact he’d actually go with them! He’d also be trained to use his nose (and would get to sniff sometimes…though butts still seemed to be a no no).
The training back at Yorktown Heights was much more intense. It was no longer about sits and stays, or even umbrellas. There were agility courses to master, scents to learn how to both detect and track, he learned how to pull people from a dangerous scene without hurting them and even how to protect people! He felt so excited with all of the new things he was learning, and best of all, he met Scott during his last month or so of training! Scott was nice to him, although he seemed a bit nervous. Nino was glad to teach him what he already knew, and tried to show off when he could. Scott and Nino began learning how to work together and the pair worked extremely well together. They gained each others trust and it wasn’t long before they loved each other. Nino became loyal to Scott more than anyone else. He learned that Scott was the one he had to obey commands from, even if two different people were telling him conflicting things. It was comforting for him to find the one person that he could trust when he was unsure of things, he knew that Scott wouldn’t let him go wrong.
After attending a nice graduation ceremony together, life for Nino changed one more time. Now he was allowed to live at home with Scott (a nice change from the kennels of the training center). Scott bought him lots of nice toys and treats and played with him at home as well as brought him out in public and to buildings where dogs normally weren’t allowed! Nino felt so special to be able to go these places and enjoyed the attention that people gave him when he was there. He knew he was doing his job well and was proud of himself for it.
Nino and Scott started out in the drug detection unit, something that Nino was trained early on for. He was great at being able to find any kind of drug during searches. He could find drugs in homes, in schools, even in busy airports! It was almost like a game! As soon as he found one and showed the drugs to Scott, Scott would praise him and give him a toy to play with or a big treat! It was like hide and seek!
Nino was an excellent drug detection dog, but then they changed jobs again. Now Scott was explaining to him that they were going to homicide (whatever that word meant to this dog). But Scott told him that they’d be in a different office, with different people, and this time they wouldn’t really be looking for drugs. Nino is very excited to start his new job as it means he can stay with Scott more.
