well, exactly THAT. so does dex share the same biological father as brian/biney/rudy? they apparently share the same biological mother, whose death they had both witnessed as children. but what about their biological father? i don't think it was revealed in any of the season1 episodes? we are waiting for the season2 DVDs...

Well we know Joe Driscoll is his bio father. The show had not denied nor confirmed whether or not they are full blood brothers, rather than half brothers. However Rudy said to Dexter on the porch steps, that they were "blood brothers".
Now, one thing to ponder is... why did Rudy kill Joe? Was it because he was upset that he wasn't acknowledged in Joe's will? Did he have resentment and anger toward him for not being there for him and his brother and letting their mother get killed, thus separating Dexter and Brian... because he was already in prison? It makes sense... to me anyway.

Since the entire season never fully reveals whether Joe Driscoll could possibly be Brian Mosers Bio father, now that I have finally watched the entire series, I have a theory. Better late than never:/ Captain Matthews clearly has a protective obligation to Dexter, as he was so close to Harry. I feel the show used that as a distraction because my gut tells me that Captain Matthews could perhaps be Brian Mosers Biological father. He may have also had an affair with Laura Moser before Harry did. At their mothers crime scene, Harry only took Dexter. Captain Matthews, knowing his affair with Laura took place before Harry's, then knew the older child (Brian) was not Harry's but could be his. To avoid Harry ever finding out, he took Brian away quickly & put him in an institution for his own selfish reasons. Although Matthews cold personification on the show was clear, I believe that deep down he felt he owed Harry, which is why he protected Dexter until the end. And for his own selfish reasons, knew & allowed Dexter to follow the code to both use Dexter to be a vigilante & take out the trash of Miami, as well as keep his career moving up the ladder - as serial killers usually do for law enforcement professionals, code or no code.
