The code was good. It was everything that Dexter needed to keep him from getting caught and channeling his urges to an appropriate release. Harry was never happy with how his adopted son had turned out but there was nothing to be done to change what he was now. There was never anything that could be done for people with Dexter's problem and thus the 'code' was created.
Now that there was a code that Harry was comfortable with and believed would protect and benefit his son it was time to put it to use. He would have to teach it to Dexter as well as train him in how to use the code and do what the code would not help him with. Stalking was important as the code. If he was to get caught tailing or snooping one of the murderers he was targeting then things could end very badly for Dexter. They were dangerous criminals and could hurt Dexter if he was not careful.
Stalking would be his first lesson. Nothing extravegant but something essential and it would need to start sooner than later. So, he went to Dexter's room and knocked on the door before opening it without waiting for a response. "Son," he said as he peeked around the door.

Dexter had been sitting on the floor of his room. He had finished his homework already, and was feeling bored about what to do the rest of the day. Nothing held his interest. He had taken out his pocket knife and was playing with it, just opening the different blades, watching them snap closed again, when his father came in.
He looked up a little surprised. "Dad!" He said closing up the knife and standing up so he wouldnt have to strain his neck so much to talk to him. Dexter wondered if he had done something wrong. The look on his father's face seemed so serious.

Harry passed into the room and closed the door behind him in case Debra was near enough to hear. He had always had every intention of making sure that Debra never found out about her adopted brother's urges. He would do his best to make sure that Dexter was even able to hide it from the people who were supposed to know him the best. The only person who would ever know was himself. "Today is the day, Dex," he said in a serious tone.
"We are begining your training today," he moved closer to his son and placed his hand on his shoulder. "Do you think you are ready for what you need to learn in order to survive?" He wished to train the boy but did not want to push him too soon and give him too much to learn at once.

When Harry closed the door behind him it only confirmed to Dexter that this was something serious. He could see this his father wasn't looking forward to whatever it was he had to say, but when the words came out, the corner's of Dexter's mouth went up in a little smile. It was what he had been waiting for. His father had told him long ago that he'd never be normal, but now he'd have a way to channel his urges and maybe it would make the pretending easier.
He nodded as Harry asked him if he was ready. "Yeah. I'm ready Dad. This is what I need" He told him, knowing he needed an outlet for the things he felt. "What do we do first?" He asked excited.

Harry was a bit put of at the excitement in Dexter's voice. "This is not a game son. This is not something for you to get worked up about. This is serious and I need you to be focused and 100% with me on this," he said to his son in the stern tone he was known to have when discussing these things with Dexter. He knew that his son needed this outlet. He knew that he needed a place to let out his urges and a way to do that was in Harry's reach but he had to be careful to make sure that Dexter would actually learn what he was telling him and not slip up...ever.
He sighed and continued on placing his hand on the young teens shoulder. "Now, the first rule is...Never get caught," he said nodding, "You never, ever get caught. Everything you do is to conceal what is truly inside of you and not get caught." He stopped for effect hoping that his words would have time to sink into Dexter's mind. "Now the first way we make sure that you don't get caught is perfecting the stalk. I am going to show you how to tail and pick your targets." Harry called them targets as what Dexter would call them made him cringe.

Dexter could see the disapproval in his father's eyes as he told him this wasn't a game. Even though Dexter felt excited by this, he knew that wasnt what Harry wanted to see. "I know its not a game...I'll take this serious...I'm focused" Dexter tried to convince his father, worried that he might think Dexter wasn't ready if he didnt act serious about this.
Dexter listened closely as Harry told him the first rule. This was it. They were starting it. He'd have a way to deal with the urges that came to him. Don't get caught. It seemed so simple, but it was a very necessary first rule. When his father paused after telling him how important that rule was, Dexter nodded, letting his father know he understood. "Don't get caught" He repeated.
His listened intently as his first lesson was made known. He'd learn how to pick a victim and stalk them. It was feeling more real just hearing his father say the words, validating that he was allowing Dexter to do this, that he understood that his son needed to do this. "How do I know who to pick?"

"That's right son," he said patting him on the back a bit with a tight lipped expression."You don't get caught. And that is the most important thing. If you ge caught then it's all over. You won't have to worry about having an outlet for this because you will not be doing anything ever again." He knew the consequences of what Dexter was all too well when they were handed over to the justice system. Usually it did not end well for them, and Florida was a Death Penalty statem, but he never wanted to entertain that thought though he knew it was a necessary evil. "The consequences of this need....this urge you have, and fulfilling it are dire. You understand that too, don't you?" He was still trying to make sure that this would work. He had been worried about beginning the training at all but knew it was the only way he could keep Dexter from getting in trouble.
He nodded. "I'm going to help you at first. We aren't going to be following through yet. That will come in time. When I'm sure that you are ready for it. I'm going to make sure that you can perfect everything first. That is very important too. We need to make sure everything is perfect or all of the training and rules will be for nothing." He began to pace a bit in front of Dexter. "I will help pick targets and then I will let you start to find your own targets. It should be easy for you to find them, they will be just like you," he said to him stopping in front of him. "I have one picked out already. Remember we aren't going to do anything but follow and watch, so that you cna learn to do it undetected."

Dexter nodded knowing how serious his father was that he didn’t get caught. If he got caught, it would be either life in prison or the death penalty. Dexter didn’t know how he’d cope with either of those thoughts. He’d have to make sure that no matter what, he didn’t let anyone find out. He nodded as his father asked if he understood the consequences. “It could get me killed” He responded. Even if it wasn’t the judicial system putting him to death, if one of his victims fought back, he could be killed by them.
Dexter watched Harry begin pacing. He knew this couldn’t be easy for him, usually Harry was so pulled together but now his nerves were showing through. When he mentioned how his targets would be just like Dexter, it made him wonder if there would be people out there hunting him. If Dexter wasn’t his son, would Harry be thinking he deserved to die too? “ We’ll just watch them…but what if someone sees us…while I’m still learning not to get caught?” He asked, knowing he didn’t already know how to go about stalking people without their knowledge.

"That's right son. It could get you killed." Harry did not know if Dexter truly understood the gravity of that statement but was not about to wait around and see. He would take that matter into his own hands down the line. He had an idea for making the point to the boy, but knew this was not the corrct time to show him. He needed to get him started first.
He stood before his son and lowered his eyes to the boys. "You will not get caught. No one will see us. We are not going to go through with it now. You are not ready yet. We are just going to watch, and no one will see you because I'm going to teach you how to not let anyone see you. You have help that no one else like you has Dexter, and you need to treat it the way it should be treated. Have faith in what I teach you. It will save you." He looked over at the window in Dexter's room. It was dusk and almost time to begin. "Get ready, dress in something dark. We are going to leave soon. We need it to be dark. Come and get me when you are ready to go," he said leaving the room to change himself.

Dexter nodded, looking down a little as his father repeated how this could get him killed. Dexter didnt want to die. But his fear of being killed in this manner didnt seem to be strong enough for him to tell his father to stop. He wanted this training more. He knew his father was smart, if there was a way to avoid getting himself killed, Harry would be able to teach it to him. Dexter was sure of it.
Dexter looked back up at his father as he told him he wouldnt get caught. He didnt want to argue with him but couldnt help but think there was a chance he could make a mistake. "I'm glad to have your help Dad. I'll listen to everything you tell me" Dexter said wanting to make sure that his father didnt decide to back out. He nodded as his father told him to get changed in something dark. Once harry left the room Dexter headed to his closet. He found a pair of dark blue jeans, a black longsleeve tshirt and some boots. It seemed like a good outfit to keep hidden in. Once he was dressed he went out into the hall to find his father. "Is this good?"
