Dexter could practically see his brother relaxing in front of him, becoming more at ease, as Dexter himself felt more comfortable with the situation. It was a familiar feeling he was starting to get. It felt normal, calming to just talk with his brother now.
Dexter smiled as Rudy said that he would stay for him. He hoped it would stay safe for Rudy to remain here with him. That Rudy could keep the life he had started to develop here without fear of being found out. Dexter already found himself worrying about his brother, knowing the police were hunting him (as Dexter was technically a part of). He’d have to make sure that they stayed away. “I won’t let anything happen to you if you stay” He said a bit protectively of his brother, not that Rudy really needed his help, he had been doing well so far.
“I can do the preliminary research from here, just will have to iron out the details at work” Dexter explained. There was a lot that he could find out just from the internet about most of his victims. Pulling up old newspaper articles, that sort of thing. Other things he needed the police files for. “I’ll do it soon”
Dexter smiled watching his brother laugh, seeing that his brother shared his sense of humor, as dark as it may be. “Next…how about those steaks you brought? “

Rudy listened as Dexter also mentioned that he would protect him. This was a new feeling for Rudy and surprisingly, it made him feel good. Someone genuinely cared about him enough, the real person, Brian, which was unheard of in his world.
"You know, with me staying, I have to find another place, maybe outside of Miami. I have to look around." Rudy tilted his head like he heard someone call his name, then he looked at Dexter, " Hey, you think you can ask around at work about the status on my case. If they're looking for me or if something else is distracting them? That would help tremendously!"
Rudy tilted his head again, like he heard that voice, "I have an idea... no I can't say it." Dexter looked at him with a 'c'mon we're being honest here'. So, Rudy continued, "Would you think another body, done in a different manner, like strangled and just dumped or whatever, would distract them? I've changed my MO before and that's what's kept me off of radar, for the most part."
Rudy nodded in agreement with Dexter saying that he'll investigate soon. But when is soon, he thought? A couple of days? Next week? "Why the delay, Dex?" Rudy didn't expect an answer for some reason.
Rudy also didn't want Dexter to think he was backing him into a corner to do this, which was not his intention. He just couldn't contain all his excitement. Realizing this, Rudy agreed about the steaks, "Sure all this talking has made me hungry. I didn't think you enjoyed my cooking last time, so would you want to take point?"

“I can help you look if you want” Dexter offered, thinking that was the type of thing a brother was supposed to do. In an ideal world he’d be able to offer his brother a place to stay with him until he found something else he liked, but logically he knew that wouldn’t work out. Dexter had a life established, with people who would ask too many questions.
Dexter watched Rudy react as if someone was calling him. Dexter even looked behind Rudy wondering if someone was coming, but it appeared not to be the case. He nodded hearing Rudy’s request. “Yeah of course, I’ll see what the status is and if they’ve gotten any closer to finding you” Dexter assured him. He would let Brian, or Rudy, know if it seemed that the police were getting closer.
Dexter looked at Rudy intrigued as he said he had an idea. He was glad that he didn’t keep the idea to himself. “Yeah, I think if they have another killer that they’re looking for, and if the Ice Truck Killer didn’t have any new victims for awhile it could definitely take some of the heat off of you…but changing things around so much…you’d have to be extra careful not to leave any evidence or they’d just have one more way to come after you” Dexter then paused realizing his brother had obviously done this before its not like he was exactly a new killer. “Sorry, you probably knew that already”
Rudy was right not to expect an answer when he asked about the delay. Dexter wasn’t even sure himself why he wasn’t running to his computer right now to look it up. It seemed at the moment he was more interested in talking to his newfound flesh and blood sibling than in a kill.
“Yeah, I can prepare them this time…but trust me it wasn’t your cooking. I was more distracted that night by new memories from the crime scene you gave me” Dexter explained.

Rudy appreciated Dexter's offer for help, but thought it may be better if Rudy looked by himself. He didn't want to bring more attention to himself OR Dexter than either needed. "Thanks so much for offering", Rudy said with a genuine smile, "but I think it may be safe for both of us if I searched alone. You understand, right? And we certainly couldn't live together. Not only do we need our time alone, but you have appearances you need to keep up and how would it look if they realized you were sharing your apartment with a serial killer?" Rudy laughed just thinking about it.
"Thanks for checking in with the police status. It's more than appreciated and I know you don't have to do that." Rudy can't believe how much support he's getting from Dexter. This bonding lunch is going pretty well!
Rudy listened patiently as Dexter described how not to get caught if he was planning a murder for the purpose of distraction. Yes, Rudy knew all that already, but appreciated the advice; from one serial killer to another to one brother to another. He even felt privledged to listen to him. "Thanks for the advice. It's always good to have reminders", Rudy says with a bigger smile.
"I have to say that I'm really enjoying being here talking with you and sharing our thoughts. I had always hoped we could do this, but never thought it would arrive."
Rudy continued the smile as Dexter mentioned it wasn't Rudy's cooking, but the gifts Rudy left for him. "Ok, you cook the steaks and maybe I can think about giving you another crime scene to inspire you and work over...?", Rudy said with a taunting and playful smirk.

Dexter nodded as Rudy explained how it would be better for him to go looking alone. “Yeah, I understand. You’re right, we don’t want to raise any more suspicion. It’ll be safer.” Dexter then paused a moment, a trace of a smirk appearing on his face. “You know, I think I might already have a serial killer living here”
“You’re welcome” Dexter told him sincerely. “ I want to do what I can to help” He said actually meaning it. There weren’t many people that he truly would care about doing small favors for (unless he thought he should to keep up his cover). But he wanted to do this, he wanted to do something to help out Rudy.
Dexter laughed lightly as Rudy thanked him for his advice about not getting caught. “I’m sure you already have that one covered.” He said, glad to see that Rudy didn’t appear to be offended or think that Dexter didn’t think he could handle this on his own. Dexter knew that Rudy was more than capable of creating a crime scene without leaving evidence behind. Maybe he was even better at it than Dexter was. Dexter disposed of his evidence into the water, he had never risked leaving a body out just for the police to find. Rudy was bolder than he was.
“I’m enjoying this too” Dexter admitted. “I never thought I’d have someone I could talk to like this. “
Dexter smiled as Rudy mentioned the possibility of giving him another crime scene. “Maybe a different kind this time, someone to throw them off your track? Or you could always start planning how we’d work together…I mean we’re both used to working alone” Dexter said as he started to work on the steaks.

When Dexter said there was already one serial killer living in his apartment, Rudy couldn't help but laugh - it was quite funny.
Rudy continued to allow Dexter to give advice for not getting caught. He enjoyed this and even offered his own admiration, "Disposing of your victims in the deep water is very smart. And the way you secure all the plastic wrap - top of the line. By taking all those measures, as you're aware, it generally limits leaving evidence. You do excellent work!"
Rudy listened intently as Dexter suggested leaving a new body for the police, killed in a different matter than the Ice Truck Killer. And when Dexter suggested how they would work together, they were so many ideas floating through Rudy's mind. "I know several abandoned warehouses that I've been staking out which are in prime locations: deserted, dark and the police don't patrol. And depending on the victim, their place of residence is often a great sopt, too. If you insist on killing another killer, I can work with that. If you're more flexible, even better, but again we both should feel comfortable."
Rudy continued to express his ideas while Dexter cooked the steaks. "If we had to immobilize them, we both have ways we've done before. If we had to move them, I know a white van that's easily accessible. Now, although we both enjoy stalking, it may be less conspicuous if one of us does that part then the other comes to the location or the one doing the stalking delivers the victim to the location? And we could alternate. For me, it's the feeling I get when I kill... physically, mentally and sexually. And I'm sure we would not have a problem agreeing on disposal. However, again, I'm very flexible."
Did Rudy give Dexter too much information for him to handle? Or does Dexter appreciate his honesty and even understands what Rudy's saying?

Dexter felt an odd warm feeling inside as Rudy laughed at his jokes. The things Dexter was saying would make most people look at him with horror, like he was a monster who needed to be put down. But Rudy understood his humor. It was comforting.
"Thank you, thats high praise coming from you" Dexter said, honestly respecting his brother's opinion in this matter. He had admired him from afar for so long, now here they were comparing methods.
Dexter listened to Rudy's ideas, wondering how long he had been thinking about this before approaching Dexter. Had Dexter known sooner about his brother, he may have made plans just like this. "I do want it to be another killer, someone who deserves it." Dexter said, wondering if his brother thought this made him weak.
Dexter was getting more excited the more he heard Rudy describing how they could work together on the kill. Dexter understood exactly the rush that Rudy was describing. That feeling that he'd get as soon as he dealt the fatal blow. "The feeling of ecstasy, and calm that rushes over you. For me its soothing, feeding the urge. Its like a release....you seem to have thought this out well"

"Gee Dex, did you ever think you'd be talking in detail with another person about your different killing nuances?" Rudy asked with in a half serious/ half joking tone. "Neither did I." Just as Rudy said that, Dexter put the second steak on the plate.
Rudy nodded as Dexter explained to him he wanted their first kill together to be another killer, one who Dexter is all so familiar with. "That's fine; like I said I don't have a problem with it. Although I don't follow your code, I can oddly understand where you're coming from." And Rudy did mean that. "... Just don't turn your blade on me, brother", saying with a friendly and comical warning.
It was amazing to Rudy just how alike they are. There was just so much to catch up on, but it seems they're off to a great start. "Oh yes, the calm, feeding the urge, the release... there's nothing like it!"
The steaks that were cooked to each man's specific likes were quickly devoured. It made Rudy realize just how hungry he was. Rudy took another bite and said, "Then look this guy, Marc up, so we can decide if he's who we want to take. Meanwhile why don't you think about what position you'd want to be in. Who knows, after reading about this guy, you might want to be up first...?"
So much to look forward to, Rudy thought.

"No I didnt...I still can barely believe that I'm talking about it with anyone now...I wouldnt be surprised if you were some figment of my imagination" Dexter said, only half joking. It seemed too good to be true to have someone he could connect with like this. It was as if he was waiting for something bad to happen now.
"Thank you for understanding" Dexter said, appreciating that Rudy didnt seem to think it was pathetic that Dexter was sticking to the code. He respected it. Dexter gave a grin when Rudy warned him not to turn his blade on him. "Dont give me reason to brother" Dexter told him, also playfully warning but with a serious undertone to it. Dexter didnt even want to think about the possibilty of doing that to Rudy. It wasnt a place he wanted to go in his mind.
Dexter watched as Rudy ate the steak, it looked like he was enjoying it. Dexter wanted to please his brother. "I will, I'll look him up tonight and tomorrow morning....whoever goes first, I want us to both be there when it happens, experience it together" Dexter told him.
Dexter was quiet a moment, knowing there was something that he needed to talk to his brother about but nervous about the reaction he'd get. Things had been going so well tonight, he didnt want to ruin it, and he really couldnt predict his brother's reactions yet. "There's something I need you to do for me..." Dexter told him, deciding it was now or never. "Leave Deb alone..."

Rudy pinched himself, "Ouch", he said while laughing and listening to Dexter suggest Rudy may have been a figment of his imagination. "I'm here, in the flesh."
Rudy seemed surprised by Dexter's response to his warning "Sorry, I guess that wasn't a funny joke. I won't do anything that will put you in that position!"
Then the excitement and anticipation returned as Dexter mentioned that he wants both of them right there when they take their first victim together. Rudy can see this 'project' taking up all his time.
What Dexter said next, just took Rudy for a loop. He wasn't expecting that at all! "I will not do anything to harm Deb. I give you my word. I'm also thinking that it's probably best that you don't mention our new connections to her nor anyone. I don't see anything good coming out of that." He said with a smile.
Trying to life both their spirits, Rudy returned to the subject they both were excited about. "Are there any particular tools you'd like to use? Which methods are you thinking about? I can get a bag ready tonight while looking for a new place."
During the conversations today, there were times Rudy also thought if this was really happening. Even though Rudy thought about his brother every day since that childhood incident, he just cannot believe they've connected so well. Rudy had his doubts that Dexter would accept him, at least partially. But now those doubts have been erased. The only thing on Rudy's mind now is getting back on track.

Dexter smiled watching Rudy pinch himself to prove that he was real. “Maybe my figments can do that too” He joked with his brother.
Dexter’s smile faded however as Rudy apologized for his joke. “No, I’m sorry, it was funny.” He said, wonder if he was already starting to mess things up with Rudy.
Dexter felt relief as Rudy gave his word not to hurt his sister. “Thank you, that means a lot to me” He told him honestly. He was trusting Rudy that he’d keep his word. “And you’re probably right, I don’t think telling anyone we’re connected will do either of us any good.” He said knowing that was the best option right now.
When they started to discuss weapons Dexter felt more at ease. This was a topic he was more comfortable with, even if the other discussion was necessary as well. “I usually use knives, but I’m open to change if there’s something you’ve been thinking about trying”

Rudy laughed as Dexter suggested his imagination figments may be real, too. Rudy realized that he hadn't laughed like this ever in his entire life. It was such a good feeling.
"Don't worry about the joke. I didn't realize that I touched upon a soft spot. And yes, I think Dark Dexter does have a soft spot." Whether he suspected it our not, Dexter does show emotions from time to time; not often the real heavy ones, but emotions nonetheless. And Rudy enjoys seeing these moments, as brief as they are.
Ok, back to business, thought Rudy. "Knives are always great. We both seem to prefer them and the variety of blades and uses they offer are endless." Moving on, Rudy suggested means of immobilization; partial (like a fishing line) or complete (like a tranquilizer). "It really would depend on where we take him over and if we plan to move him. Like if we surprised him at home, that would be different than taking him from a parking lot or another public place."
All this talk and anticipation for their first kill together is getting Rudy very anxious. He may go out tonight just to satisfy his own urges as they seem to be getting stronger as this conversation continues. If he does decide to do his own tonight... should he mention it to Dexter? And if so, would Dexter be angry or offended?

Dexter enjoyed seeing that he was able to make Rudy laugh. Mostly because the things that Rudy was laughing at wasnt the type of humor Dexter used around most people having been trained that they'd think it was funny. But no, Rudy was laughing at the same things Dexter was amused by.
Dexter smirked as Rudy said that even Dark Dexter had a soft spot. "Apparently you're a soft spot for me. I dont usually have such reservations about harming a killer"
Dexter listened as Rudy gave the options for immobilization and mentioned how depending on where they took him, that could determine which method was best. "I usually find taking them from someplace public to be easier. Just from knowing that if someone notices they've gone missing, the house is the first place anyone would look for clues" He said shrugging slightly.

When Rudy heard Dexter say that he had a soft spot for him, Rudy smiled, but also thought that was a good thing Dexter felt that way. However on the other hand, Rudy wondered if those reservations would decrease and Dexter would surprise him. Rudy would like to think Dexter wouldn't harm him considering, but again with this 'code of Harry', he had a few doubts. One thing's for sure, Rudy would never harm Dexter and would do anything in his power to protect him.
Rudy nodded as he listened to Dexter's ideas about taking someone from a public place versus their home. "Hmmm, that makes sense. Well, did you want me to further look into those abandoned warehouses? We do need somewhere to work."
Not trying to change the subject, but Rudy needed to get some things out of the way. "When we do this together, do you have any commitments, outside of work and Rita, that you'd need to be careful? I mean, I wouldn't want to you to miss work or anything, which may raise suspicion."

Dexter was glad to see Rudy's smile. It wasnt easy for him to be vulnerable and admit when he was fond of someone, but Rudy had reacted well. Dexter didnt have any intentions of hurting Rudy, despite his code which may go against that. Even when he had no idea that the ice truck killer was actually his flesh and blood brother as well, Dexter never wanted to see him put down. He was too impressed to want to see it end. And now that he knew about their connection, he wanted to protect Rudy as much as Rudy did him.
Dexter nodded as Rudy asked him about looking into some warehouses to do the actual kill. "Yeah, I think that'd be a good idea. See what you can find"
Dexter thought about Rudy's next question. Rudy was thinking this through, and Dexter had to admit to himself that he was surprised at how willing Rudy was to work around Dexter's front of a life. "I think as long as I dont have a case or a date I should be fine...thanks for asking"
